Every Hounslow round moves a day this week, so Friday's becomes Saturday 5 September. Plus the four-box system, £75 garden waste and the Space Waye trial.
Hounslow gives every house four containers for recycling and only one for rubbish. Three of the four are boxes, they go out every week, and putting the wrong thing in one of them means the crew leaves it. That is more sorting than most London boroughs ask for, and it is where almost every missed collection in Chiswick starts.
This page covers the borough-wide rules, the prices for the paid services, and the Space Waye tip. Everything here was read from Hounslow Council’s own pages and documents on Monday 31 August 2026.
This week, every collection is a day late
Today is the summer bank holiday, and Hounslow’s crews are not working. The council has published the revised week:
| Your usual day | Revised day |
|---|---|
| Monday 31 August | Tuesday 1 September |
| Tuesday 1 September | Wednesday 2 September |
| Wednesday 2 September | Thursday 3 September |
| Thursday 3 September | Friday 4 September |
| Friday 4 September | Saturday 5 September |
Source: the council’s waste and recycling collection days page.
Note the last row. If your round is normally Friday, you are collected on Saturday 5 September, not the following Monday. That catch-up Saturday is the one people miss.
This is not a one-off arrangement. The council’s own zone calendar states the standing rule in a single line: “No service on Bank holidays, collections will take place the following day.” So the same slide happens at every bank holiday, in both collection zones.
Which container takes what
The three boxes are collected every week, all on the same day. The black bin and the brown garden bin are fortnightly, on alternate weeks to each other. Food waste is weekly.
The rules that catch people out, all from the council’s own container pages:
- Red box: no carrier bags, no plastic wrapping, no crisp packets or bread bags. Hounslow says these tangle its machinery and can start fires, and that finding them in your box counts as contamination, which means the box is not emptied. Wash and squash, and leave lids on plastics.
- Blue box: no cardboard bigger than 70cm by 70cm, and no shredded paper at all. Flatten boxes or take them to the tip. Small amounts of shredded paper can go in the food waste bin instead.
- Green box: glass bottles and jars only. Metal jar lids belong in the black bin, not the green box.
- Black bin: carrier bags, wrapping, polystyrene, nappies and sanitary waste double-bagged, and broken glass wrapped in newspaper. No building rubble, no chipboard or carpet from home improvements, and no Japanese knotweed.
Two extra streams go out in bags alongside the boxes, weekly, and neither is widely known: small electrical items, and clothing, textiles and shoes. For electricals the test is whether the item and its cable fit inside a supermarket carrier bag, with batteries taken out. Vapes are excluded.
Coffee pods are no longer collected. Hounslow’s kerbside pod service with Podback ended on 14 February 2026. The council’s own “Your collections” hub still lists coffee pod collections as a service and still describes getting pods “collected from your home”, so if you followed that link you were told about a service that stopped six months ago. Pods now go to Space Waye or a supermarket drop-off point.
Timings, and the hot weather rule
Collections happen any time between 7am and 5pm, so containers need to be out by 7am, on the front boundary of your property and visible from the pavement without standing on it.
Hounslow also brings crews out early in heatwaves, and it publishes the trigger temperatures: 5am if the day is going to reach 33°C or above, 6am if it is going to reach 28°C or above. That is on the council’s own missed collection page, and it matters because a bin put out at 6.30am on a hot Thursday can legitimately be recorded as not presented.
To find your own day, use the council’s collection day lookup. There is also a printable calendar, but be aware of what it covers: the zone A and zone B PDFs linked from the collection days page run from 1 April 2026 to 31 October 2026 only.
Christmas: not published yet
Hounslow has not released its Christmas collection dates for 2026. What it has committed to is the garden waste position: collections pause for two weeks over Christmas and New Year, and the council says it will publish the exact dates nearer the time. Everything else about Christmas, including whether the usual one-day slide applies across the holiday week, is unpublished, so this page does not guess at it. Check the collection days page from early December.
Garden waste: £75, and no refunds
Garden waste is a paid subscription. For 2026/27 the council charges:
- £75 a year, or £37.50 if you receive Council Tax Reduction (the income-based one; a single person discount or disability band relief does not qualify)
- the year runs 1 April to 31 March, whenever you join
- you get a 240-litre brown wheelie bin, or two 90-litre sacks if your property cannot take a bin. You do not get to choose the sacks.
Two things in the terms are worth knowing before you pay. First, there is no part-year price: join in October and you still pay £75 for the months that are left. Second, apart from a 14-day cooling-off period, there are no refunds at all, including for missed collections. The council’s own arithmetic is that a subscription taken out by 1 April buys 25 collections, which it presents as £3 each.
If a garden bin is not put out in time it is logged as “not presented” and the crew does not come back. Your options then are to wait a fortnight, take it to the tip, or pay £10 for an extra collection. A lost or stolen brown bin costs £75 to replace, unless it was damaged during a collection. All of this is in the garden waste subscription terms.
Bulky waste, and a price the council has not updated
Hounslow will collect large items for a fee, with a minimum charge covering up to five items. Bookings are by phone only, on 020 8583 5555, option one.
Here the council’s service page and the council’s approved fee schedule do not agree. The bulky waste page still quotes one set of prices. The fees and charges schedule for 2026/27, taken to Cabinet in February 2026, sets another:
| Charge | On the service page | In the 2026/27 fee schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Up to five items | £41 | £43.50 |
| Each item after five | £8.20 | £9.50 |
| Up to five items, Council Tax Reduction | £15 | £16.50 |
| Each extra item, Council Tax Reduction | £3 | £3.70 |
| Up to five items, landlord | £72 | £80 |
| Each extra item, landlord | £14.40 | £17 |
The schedule also removes a freebie. A mattress taken as a sixth item used to cost nothing; the 2026/27 line sets it at £20. Confirm the price on the call rather than budgeting from the website.
The practical limits are the same either way. Collections run Monday to Friday, 7am to 3pm, and items must be out by 7am at the point you nominated when booking. Nothing over 183cm in any direction, and nothing two people cannot lift, so no cast iron baths, no American-style fridge-freezers and no pianos. Three securely tied bags, each under 10kg, count as one item, which means a five-item booking can be up to 15 bags.
If a collection is missed
The reporting window is narrow and the council enforces it. You can report from 5pm on your collection day until 5pm the next working day, and no earlier, because the council waits for the drivers’ returns before accepting reports. Miss that window and the report will not be taken.
If the report is accepted, Hounslow returns within two working days. If the container was recorded as not presented, contaminated or too heavy, it will not, and you either wait for the next round or pay for a one-off collection. That one-off charge is another figure moving this year: £10.50 currently, rising to £13 in the 2026/27 schedule.
Replacement containers are cheap by comparison: £27 to deliver a wheelie bin, £4 for a recycling box.
Space Waye tip: booking rules that are about to change
Chiswick’s nearest household waste site is at the other end of the borough:
- Space Waye Reuse and Recycling Centre, Pier Road, off Faggs Road, North Feltham Trading Estate, Feltham TW14 0TH
- Open 8am to 3.30pm, seven days a week
- Visits are capped at 30 minutes, twice a day, and three times a week
The booking rules are in the middle of a trial, and the trial is nearly over. On 9 March 2026 the council began a six-month trial that dropped the booking requirement from Monday to Thursday. Bookings are still needed on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. Six months from 9 March lands in early September, and the council has not said what happens next, so check the booking page before driving over in the second week of September.
What you need to take differs by day. On a no-booking day, proof of address. On a booking day, photo ID and a utility or council tax bill, which can be on your phone, and you must arrive inside your slot or within ten minutes of the end of it.
Today, 31 August, the site is closed to trade customers and to anyone in a van or with a trailer. Residents in cars can still go, but only with a confirmed booking.
Going on foot or by bicycle is possible but cannot be booked online. You email spacewaye@hounslow.gov.uk at least 24 hours ahead for a Tuesday to Friday visit, or before 3pm on the Friday for a weekend or Monday visit, and you cannot enter without the confirmation email.
